Lemnos on 21st October 1915 witnessed an extraordinary and moving event during the horrors of the Gallipoli campaign - a marriage between an Anzac soldier and an Australian nurse. This happy day amongst a war was caught in photographs.

Nurse Clarice Daley was with the 3rd Australian General Hospital and Sergeant Ernest Lawrence was with the 1st Light Brigade Headquarters. They had known each other in Melbourne, only to meet up again on Lemnos. Following their marriage, Jessie was discharged and returned to Australia in July 1916, presumably becuase she was now married. Ernest did not return to Australia until November 1918, when they were able to commence their married life together, going on to have five children. They lived in Docker Street, Elwood. Ernest died in 1933 and Clarice in 1944. They are both buried in St Kilda Cemetery.
